Pig Pregnancy Scanning Service
Need or like to know if your pig is pregnant? Considering getting the boar back in but not sure if she is already in the family way?
Boar jump in and you want to know she is NOT pregnant? Want to find out if AI worked? Just really want to know?
We can scan your pig(s) using a Doppler Ultrasound Scanner from day 18 of pregnancy. The tester we use is non-invasive and detects the presence of amniotic fluid in the uterus. It uses a phenomenon of ultrasound wave reflection, from outside the pigs body. The probe which is placed on the female body sends a beam of ultrasound wave which reflects from the uterus horns filled with fluid and returns, causing a change in the signal generated by the instrument.
In pigs you can perform the tests between 18 and 75 days post mating; however, the highest accuracy is achieved when the tests are performed between 25 and 35 days. In this period there is the highest level of amniotic fluid in the uterus, therefore it is located the most easily. Pregnancies over 75 days can still be detected although with less accuracy due to the diminishing amount of fluid in the uterus. It cannot tell you how many piglets the sow has just if she is pregnant.
Your sow will require some form of restraint, usually food or food plus hurdles is sufficient. It is essential that your pig is kept calm to enable accurate testing.
COST: Up to 20 mile radius of Billingshurst and up to 5 sows is £50, additional sows are £7 each. For distances greater than 20 miles by most direct road route, then an additional £0.75 per mile applies (round trip).
